In a recent interview, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Ukraine will not receive a NATO invitation anytime soon due to the ongoing war in the country. Scholz emphasized that a country at war cannot become a NATO member, and there is currently no need for a new decision on this matter. Both Berlin and Washington support restricting long-range strikes into Russia to avoid escalating the conflict.
Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court warned Mongolia for failing to arrest Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who is charged with war crimes. The ICC had issued warrants for Putin and another Russian official for unlawful actions during the invasion of Ukraine. Mongolia, a signatory country to the ICC, did not cooperate in arresting Putin during his visit in September.
On a separate note, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with Putin during the BRICS summit in Kazan and condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a violation of international law. Guterres emphasized the need for negotiations and called for “a just peace.”
Overall, the international community continues to navigate the complexities of the conflict in Ukraine and work towards a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
