Striking staff causes power outage in Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory, faced a complete power outage on October 25 due to striking workers at the thermal power station in Jarry. The workers entered the command room and shut down all engines, affecting 230,000 households. The restoration of electricity was expected by 3 pm local time, with police intervening and staff being requisitioned to bring the station back online.

A labor dispute over pay between the CGT union and EDF utility has led to power outages, impacting daily life and businesses in Jarry. Emergency services and hospitals have activated backup generators to ensure critical operations continue. Residents have begun stocking up on bottled water as the water supply was also affected.

Guadeloupe relies on its own power production, with 70% coming from thermal sources. The French government has mobilized resources to restore power quickly. Despite the challenges, the community is coming together to support each other in this time of need.
