Sri Lanka police arrest 3 for threatening Israelis at tourist spots

Sri Lankan police have arrested three individuals following a threat to Israeli travelers, prompting heightened security measures at popular tourist spots. The Special Task Force has increased security in areas like Colombo after a warning from the US Embassy. Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed the arrests but remained tight-lipped to protect the ongoing investigation.

Authorities have boosted security in tourist hubs like Arugam Bay, Weligama, and Ella, following intelligence reports of a potential threat to Israeli tourists. Israel’s national security council has advised its citizens to avoid certain areas in southern Sri Lanka due to the risk. With tourism on the rise as the country emerges from economic struggles, safety measures are crucial.

The US Embassy has also cautioned Americans to steer clear of Arugam Bay. After devastating attacks in 2019, the country has been working to rebuild its tourism industry. As the year-end season approaches, security checks and military presence aim to protect tourists. Despite past challenges, Sri Lanka continues to draw visitors, including a significant number from Israel.
