In a small Japanese village filled with life-sized puppets, two-year-old Kuranosuke Kato brings joy as the only child in two decades. The village, Ichinono, is facing extinction due to its aging population, with less than 60 residents. This demographic crisis is a concern nationwide, prompting Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to focus on revitalizing rural areas.
Among the eerie silence of Ichinono, elderly residents have crafted puppets to mimic a bustling society. But hope arrives with the Kato family, who moved from Osaka to the countryside during the pandemic. Their son, Kuranosuke, is embraced by the community, providing a sense of belonging and support.
While challenges like outdated residency rules persist, residents like Toshiki Kato are determined to preserve their village’s heritage. With a focus on refurbishing century-old houses, the Katos hope to prolong Ichinono’s survival.
