Russia ratifies N. Korea defense treaty, Seoul warns

As tensions rise between North Korea, Russia, South Korea, and Ukraine, the geopolitical landscape is shifting rapidly. South Korea has warned it will not ignore North Korea’s reported troop deployments to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia has moved to ratify a defense pact with North Korea, allowing for “mutual assistance” in case of aggression.

In response to North Korea’s actions, South Korea is reconsidering its policy on supplying weapons to Ukraine. President Yoon Suk Yeol stated that Seoul would take necessary actions in cooperation with the international community. The alliance between North Korea and Russia has strengthened, with Kim Jong Un praising Vladimir Putin as his “dearest friend.”

Notably, South Korea has sold billions of dollars worth of military equipment to Poland, a key ally of Ukraine. The two countries have agreed to enhance defense cooperation and support Ukraine in its efforts for peace and reconstruction. President Duda’s visit to South Korea will conclude with discussions at Hyundai Rotem and Hanwha Aerospace, leading defense contractors in the region.

Despite the ongoing tensions, a North Korean balloon carrying propaganda landed in Seoul, highlighting the complex dynamics at play in the region.
