Russia Accused of Providing Satellite Data to Houthi Rebels in Yemen
In a shocking revelation, the Wall Street Journal alleged that Russia provided satellite data earlier this year to assist Yemen’s Houthi rebels in targeting ships in the Red Sea. The data was reportedly transmitted through Iranian intermediaries and used to launch attacks with missiles and drones, causing a significant decrease in traffic through the strategic waterway. The attacks, carried out in solidarity with Palestinians amid the Israel-Gaza conflict, have resulted in casualties and ship detentions.
Amidst escalating tensions, the United States and Britain have deployed naval forces to the region and conducted airstrikes on Houthi targets in Yemen. This move comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin seeks to counter Western sanctions imposed on Russia following the Ukraine invasion. The Journal report coincided with a BRICS summit, highlighting Russia’s international engagements amidst accusations of involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
Additionally, fresh allegations of North Korean troops supporting Russia in Ukraine have further fueled the global debate on geopolitical alliances and conflicts.
