An Armagh man, Alexander McCartney, has been sentenced to a minimum of 20 years in prison for the manslaughter of a 12-year-old girl and over 180 other child abuse offenses. McCartney, described as a “disgusting child predator” by detectives, targeted young girls aged 10 to 16 through social media platforms, mostly Snapchat, using a practice known as catfishing.
One of his victims, Cimarron Thomas, tragically took her own life as a result of being blackmailed by McCartney. The grandparents of Cimarron expressed devastation over her passing, urging parents to keep communication open regarding online dangers.
With McCartney’s life sentence and a minimum 20-year tariff, authorities estimate around 3,500 victims fell prey to his abuse. The PSNI Detective Chief Superintendent described McCartney as a “disgusting child predator” who preyed on young girls to satisfy his perverse desires.
