Police Chief Must Oversee Prosecution’s Investigation into Suspicion of Myung Taekyun

George, the police chief, stated his principled position at the comprehensive parliamentary inspection of the Ministry of Public Administration and Security on October 25, 2024, regarding whether the police should investigate the suspicions of political broker Myung Tae-kyun’s ‘presidential election poll manipulation.’ He emphasized the need to monitor the prosecution’s investigation.

During the inspection, George responded to lawmaker Jeong Choon-saeng’s inquiry about the applicability of the suspicions to President Yoon Suk-yeol and his spouse for violating the public Official Election Act and receiving bribes. He mentioned that the case is under investigation by the prosecution and the High-Ranking Officials Crime Investigation Team.

When asked about the lack of progress in investigating the bribery allegations against Lady Kim Geon-hee, George reiterated the need to monitor ongoing investigations instead of duplicating efforts between different agencies. Although some lawmakers pushed for immediate police action on the election poll manipulation suspicions, George explained the need for defined criteria before initiating investigations based solely on media reports.

In response to Myung’s defamation case against the journalist who first reported the allegations, George assured ongoing police action. This situation highlights the complexities and considerations involved in law enforcement investigations.
