Americans Fear Civil War After 2024 Presidential Election
A recent YouGov poll revealed that 27% of Americans believe a civil war is likely to erupt after the upcoming US presidential election, with supporters of both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump sharing similar concerns. The survey conducted between October 18-21 for The Times and the SAY24 project showed that 6% think a second civil war is “very likely,” while 21% believe it is “somewhat likely.”
Interestingly, 12% of respondents claimed to know someone who might take up arms if they believed Trump was cheated out of victory, while 5% reported the same for Harris supporters. The poll also indicated deep divisions within American society, with 84% agreeing that the country is more divided than it was a decade ago.
After Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris, recent polls suggest that Trump is leading in swing states, despite being within the margin of error. The aftermath of the 2020 election marked by Trump supporters storming the Capitol has only exacerbated tensions, leading to arrests and federal charges for the former president.
