The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), recently inaugurated a committee of law experts to review and update outdated Nigerian laws. This initiative is aimed at promoting the rule of law and access to justice in the country.
Highlighting the importance of keeping laws current, Fagbemi expressed concern over the fact that Nigerian laws had not been updated since 2004. The committee, chaired by Mr. Olawale Fapohunda (SAN) and co-chaired by Prof. Jummai Audi, has been tasked with collecting, collating, and compiling the laws of the Federation up to 2024 within four months.
The committee will identify outdated or redundant laws, harmonize conflicting laws, and prepare a comprehensive report of their findings. Fagbemi emphasized the need to adapt to contemporary needs and values, promoting consistency and uniformity in the legal system for socio-economic growth and advancement in legal reforms.
