Netherlands struggles to punish North Korea aiding Russia.

Ruben Brekelmans, the Dutch Defence Minister, acknowledged the difficulty in implementing additional measures against North Korea for sending troops to support Russia in the war against Ukraine. Nearly all possible sanctions are already in place against the country. The minister confirmed that North Korea had deployed an estimated 1,500 troops to Russia, primarily special forces’ units. These troops are expected to be stationed in Kursk Oblast initially, with potential movement to other areas.

The Netherlands is consulting with allies on this matter, but Brekelmans admitted the challenge in finding new measures against North Korea. He emphasized the importance of condemning this action and sending a clear signal that such behavior is unacceptable.

The EU recently stated it would coordinate its response with international partners concerning North Korea’s actions. South Korean intelligence reported that 3,000 North Korean troops were sent to Russia to support the occupiers in the war against Ukraine. The White House confirmed the presence of these troops and warned they could become lawful targets if they engage in combat.
