Limpopo Premier worried about repeated incidents after 13-year-old dies from suspected food poisoning

Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba expressed concern over a suspected case of food poisoning that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy in Khubvi, Thulamela. The boy had eaten crisps offered by a shopkeeper and later experienced complications leading to his death at William Eadie Health Centre.

Three other boys who consumed the same snack were admitted to Donald Fraser Hospital but are in stable condition. This incident adds to a pattern of recurring cases in the region, with 80 pupils affected in Mopani and Vhembe.

To address the issue, Ramathuba has assembled an interministerial task team involving various government departments. The team will propose strategies to tackle the problem, with the executive council set to convene and take action promptly.

Ramathuba urged parents and communities to be cautious about snacks from illegal spaza shops, emphasizing the importance of monitoring children’s diet to prevent similar tragedies.
