LibTech Report: MGNREGS Jobs Dip, Active Workers Decline; Govt Views Scheme as ‘Fallback’

In a recent report by LibTech India, it was revealed that there has been a significant drop in employment opportunities under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The report highlighted a 16.6% decrease in employment generated in the first half of the current financial year compared to the previous year, with Tamil Nadu and Odisha being the most affected states.

Additionally, there has been an 8% decline in the number of active workers participating in the scheme. The Ministry of Rural Development emphasized that MGNREGS is a demand-driven scheme aimed at providing livelihood security to rural households.

The report also pointed out a drop in person-days of work generated under the scheme, with 14 states experiencing a decline. The reduction in person-days was attributed to factors such as job card deletions and budget constraints.

Furthermore, concerns were raised about the deletion of job cards, with 39 lakh workers being removed from the MGNREGS registry. Overall, the report shed light on the challenges faced by vulnerable rural populations in accessing employment opportunities through the scheme.
