PKK Claims Attack on Turkish Defense Firm, Killing 5
The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has taken responsibility for an attack on Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in Ankara, resulting in the deaths of five individuals and injuring 22 others. The assailants, armed with automatic rifles and explosives, carried out the assault on the state-run defense firm’s headquarters.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has condemned the attack, stating it was an attempt to threaten the country’s security. Following the incident, Turkey responded by launching airstrikes on PKK targets in northern Iraq and Syria, where the Kurdish group’s headquarters are located in the Kandil Mountains.
The PKK, designated as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union, has been engaged in sporadic conflict with the Turkish state since 1984. Despite initial peace efforts in 2011, the fragile truce collapsed in 2015, leading to an escalation in violence and increased military pressure on the Kurdish rebels.
