Iran’s Pezeshkian: BRICS Working to Thwart US Plan

Iran’s first participation as a full member in the BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia, was marked by discussions on crucial security, economic, and social issues. Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Pezeshkian emphasized the need to counter US unilateralism, which often leads to economic challenges through sanctions, by establishing a new fund as an alternative to the International Monetary Fund. The summit’s 32-page declaration strongly condemned Israeli crimes in Gaza and Lebanon while stressing the importance of cooperation across various sectors within the bloc.

Pezeshkian highlighted the theme of the Kazan Declaration, which focused on strengthening multilateralism for just global development and security. The event provided an excellent opportunity for Iran to engage in bilateral talks with various countries, including high-level discussions with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Overall, the summit showcased Iran’s commitment to building strong partnerships and pushing forward with agreements to strengthen bilateral ties. With Iran officially joining BRICS in January 2024, the bloc now represents a significant portion of the world’s population and global GDP.
