India and China have taken steps towards resolving their military standoff on the disputed Himalayan border, marking a significant thaw in relations since deadly clashes in 2020. Troops at two points in the western Himalayas have begun pulling back, signaling an end to the standoff. A recent agreement on patrolling the frontier paved the way for the first formal talks in five years between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Russia. Both sides are implementing the new pact, with troops withdrawing from areas like Depsang and Demchok where they were previously stationed.
While the military de-escalation is a positive development, India remains cautious about rebuilding economic ties with China due to a lack of trust. Steps taken by India include blocking direct flights, banning Chinese mobile applications, and restricting Chinese investments. However, there is potential for increased communication and cooperation between the two countries. Despite the long-standing border dispute dating back to 1962, there is hope for improved relations between the two Asian giants.
