Harris to discuss with Lebanese PM in Dublin

Taoiseach Simon Harris is set to meet with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati at Government Buildings today to discuss the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. The meeting will focus on the ongoing violence in the region and Ireland’s efforts to find a peaceful solution.

Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati, who recently attended an international conference in Paris, will be visiting Ireland after pledging a further €5m in aid from Tánaiste Micheál Martin. The meeting with the Taoiseach comes as a result of Ireland’s continued support for a ceasefire in the region.

The Taoiseach is expected to express his concern for the safety of Lebanese civilians in densely populated areas and reiterate Ireland’s commitment to a United Nations backed ceasefire. He will also condemn any violations of international humanitarian law.

With almost 400 peacekeepers in Lebanon as part of the UNIFIL mission, the Taoiseach will also address concerns regarding their safety during the meeting.
