A recent visit by a high-level parliamentary delegation from Germany to South Sudan highlighted the importance of upholding human rights. The parliamentarians stressed that protecting human rights is essential for the rule of law and is a fundamental obligation of every government. They emphasized that human rights are universal and should be respected by all, regardless of gender or age.
The German delegation, consisting of four Members of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid, met with Vice-President Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior and other South Sudanese officials to discuss the state of human rights in the country. They also held meetings with UN representatives and German military and police personnel serving in South Sudan.
While acknowledging the efforts of the South Sudanese government, the parliamentarians expressed their gratitude to the UN personnel for their role in maintaining peace, ensuring humanitarian access, and protecting civilians. They emphasized that German support is meant to supplement, not replace, the government’s efforts.
