International Conference in Support of Lebanon: A Closer Look
French President Emmanuel Macron recently spearheaded The International Conference in Support of Lebanon’s People and Sovereignty, held in Paris amid ongoing conflict in the region. Despite generous pledges, the conference did not yield visible progress towards a ceasefire.
The conference aimed to highlight the need for a political solution, rally international support for humanitarian aid, and bolster the Lebanese army. Over a billion dollars were pledged by the international community, surpassing the initial UN and Lebanese government’s request. An additional $200 million was earmarked for strengthening the Lebanese armed forces.
While the aid is crucial, questions remain about its efficacy. French expert Agnes Levallois emphasized the need for international pressure to halt Israeli bombardments. Despite the financial commitments, concerns persist about corruption in aid distribution in Lebanon.
The historical ties between France and Lebanon were underlined during the conference, emphasizing a shared commitment to stability and solidarity. Calls for an immediate ceasefire and an inclusive diplomatic resolution echoed throughout the discussions.
