DA MP Emma Powell issued a warning to the Presidency, cautioning them to “tread lightly” after dismissing the DA’s criticism of President Ramaphosa’s remarks about Pretoria’s relationship with Russia. Powell emphasized the importance of the DA’s role in the government of national unity and advised against arrogance.
The controversy arose from Ramaphosa’s comments during a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where he referred to Russia as a “valuable ally and friend.” The DA, a key partner in the GNU, distanced itself from these remarks.
Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya rejected the DA’s criticism, stating that the president cannot be micromanaged, especially in matters of foreign policy. Powell highlighted that the ANC does not have an outright majority, and therefore, consultation with key partners in the GNU is essential.
The DA’s Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, reiterated that while the ANC can maintain its own foreign policy, it cannot impose it on the GNU. This back-and-forth highlights the complexities of governing within a national unity framework.
