Diego Luna speaks out: Impunity fuels violence against journalists.

In May 2017, journalist Javier Valdez was brutally murdered in Culiacán, Mexico, highlighting the dangers faced by reporters covering drug-related violence. Filmmaker Diego Luna’s documentary State of Silence sheds light on the struggles of journalists in Mexico, showcasing four reporters who risk their lives to expose the truth.

Directed by Santiago Maza and produced by Luna and Gael García Bernal, the film delves into the violence and corruption plaguing Mexico, especially during the war on drugs and the recent presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador. It portrays the journalists’ relentless pursuit of justice and freedom of the press in the face of intimidation and threats.

Through the lens of State of Silence, Luna and Maza hope to spark a dialogue on systemic issues and the urgent need for change in Mexico’s media landscape. Premiering amidst a political transition, the documentary aims to engage the public in safeguarding the right to information and upholding democracy.
