China displeased with North Korea’s troops sent to war in Ukraine – FT

In a recent letter from Xi Jinping to Kim Jong Un, the absence of a traditional mention of North Korea as a “friendly neighboring country” has raised eyebrows. Speculation has surfaced regarding Beijing’s dissatisfaction, especially after foreign intelligence suggested North Korea’s deployment of over 12,000 soldiers to Russia for potential involvement in the conflict in Ukraine.

The strengthening military ties between North Korea and Russia have heightened China’s concerns, fearing the destabilization of the delicate power balance on the Korean Peninsula. This scenario could push the US, Japan, and South Korea towards bolstering their military alliances in East Asia. China aims to avoid a repeat of the early Cold War dynamics that saw a North Triangle against a South Triangle.

The looming prospect of drawing China into a war further complicates the situation. Analysts express doubts over Russia prioritizing relations with North Korea over China, despite Moscow’s ongoing support for Beijing since February 2022. The crucial point remains Kim Jong Un’s military involvement in Ukraine, which has grabbed international attention. Reports confirm the imminent arrival of North Korean troops in the conflict zone, adding a new layer of complexity to the already precarious situation.
