In the southern Pacific state of Guerrero, Mexico, a violent shootout between two rival criminal groups resulted in the deaths of 16 people on Thursday. This incident adds to the recent surge of violence plaguing the country.
The confrontation took place at around 5 a.m. in the rural, mountainous region of Guerrero, where cartels have been battling for control of territory. Local police officers were caught in the crossfire, resulting in the deaths of two officers and injuries to four others, who are now in stable condition after receiving medical treatment.
In response to the attack, the National Guard base nearby also engaged, leading to three military officers being wounded. The casualties included 14 presumed members of criminal groups, with 11 individuals arrested following the incident.
