Blinken meets Mikati, urges diplomatic resolution

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is committed to achieving a diplomatic resolution to end Israel’s offensive in Lebanon. He emphasized the importance of reaching understandings on the disarmament of Hezbollah, as outlined in U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701.

During a meeting with Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati in London, Blinken called for the protection of civilians while expressing the urgency of implementing Resolution 1701 for security along the Israel-Lebanon border. The resolution calls for the disarmament of non-state groups, including Hezbollah, and a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon.

Blinken stressed the need for immediate action to achieve a resolution and for the protection of civilians and Lebanese soldiers caught in the crossfire. He also voiced support for U.N. peacekeepers in Lebanon and discussed the appointment of a new president for the country.

Overall, Blinken underlined the importance of empowering the Lebanese Armed Forces and central government to ensure security and stability in Lebanon, while emphasizing the need for Hezbollah and Iran to not obstruct these efforts.
