Blinken discusses with Lebanon’s Mikati and Jordan’s Safadi in London

US Secretary of State Blinken is committed to a diplomatic resolution to end Israel’s offensive in Lebanon, emphasizing the critical need for Hezbollah’s disarmament. Meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Mikati in London, Blinken stressed the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 for border security. He urged immediate protections for civilians but did not call for an immediate ceasefire by Israel, which relies on US support.

The resolution, approved in 2006, aims to disarm non-state groups like Hezbollah and calls for Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon. Blinken highlighted the urgency in reaching understandings for the resolution’s full implementation. He also called for the safeguarding of civilians and Lebanese soldiers amid the conflict.

Mikati emphasized the state and Lebanese army’s role in security, aligning with Resolution 1701. Jordanian Foreign Minister Safadi joined Blinken in urging Israel to stop its aggression and ethnic cleansing in Gaza and Lebanon. The discussions also focused on humanitarian aid delivery and the importance of maintaining strong strategic relations.
