80% of the population oppose military aid to Ukraine

In a recent survey by Gallup Korea, it was revealed that 8 out of 10 Koreans oppose providing any form of military support to Ukraine, despite President Yoon Suk-yeol expressing openness to the idea. The survey, conducted through phone interviews with 1001 adults, showed that 66% of respondents believe only non-military support should be given, while 16% are against any form of aid, and only 13% support military assistance.

Interestingly, there was a significant increase from a similar survey conducted in June 2022, where only 6% were against providing any support. This shift in public opinion also transcends age groups and regions, with even President Yoon’s core supporters showing reluctance towards military involvement. Additionally, when asked about the strengthening of military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, 73% found it threatening.

These findings shed light on the complex attitudes of the Korean public towards international conflicts and alliances, and highlight the importance of balancing national interests with global solidarity.
