Russian President Vladimir Putin has revealed that North Korea is discussing to what extent they will assist Russia under the Comprehensive Strategic Partner Relations Treaty signed between the two countries. The treaty includes a provision that calls for immediate military support if one side faces armed aggression. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has raised concerns about the possibility of North Korean troops being deployed in combat areas by Russia. Putin emphasized that decisions regarding military support will be made jointly by Russia and North Korea, according to the Treaty.

In an interview, Putin stated that the Treaty’s military support clause in Article 4 has yet to be finalized and will be decided in consultation with North Korea. This sovereign decision will determine the extent and manner of military engagement, training, and sharing of experiences between the two countries. The Russian lower house has unanimously ratified the North-Russia Treaty, awaiting approval from the upper house and the exchange of ratification documents to come into effect.

On the other hand, Zelensky urged international pressure on Russia and North Korea to prevent the possible deployment of North Korean troops in combat areas. The situation remains fluid as both countries continue discussions on military cooperation under the signed Treaty.
