Zelensky refuses to sign bill ending daylight saving time, media reports.

President Volodymyr Zelensky is not planning to sign a bill that would abolish seasonal daylight saving time in Ukraine, according to BBC Ukraine. The bill, passed by Parliament on July 16, aimed to eliminate daylight saving time in the country, with the last clock adjustment set for Oct. 27, 2024. However, Zelensky has not signed the bill, despite it being sent to him on Aug. 21.

The decision not to sign the bill was confirmed by sources within the president’s team and the parliamentary faction. The bill, which was supported by parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, will not be vetoed or enacted due to potential financial losses estimated in the billions of hryvnias.

While many countries around the world have embraced daylight saving time to maximize daylight during summer, the EU has debated abolishing the practice. Ukrainian lawmakers presented the bill as a step towards EU integration. Despite the ongoing debate, Zelensky’s decision not to sign the bill means that Ukrainians may continue to adjust their clocks twice a year for the foreseeable future.
