With the goal of establishing conservation areas in the Northern Metropolis, a consultant commissioned by the Hong Kong government has recommended prioritizing the creation of a 338-hectare Sam Po Shue wetland park. The report suggests developing wetland parks in the 30,000-hectare Northern Metropolis area, proposing a theme of “ecotourism paradise” for the Nam Sang Wai wetland park.
The report also recommends expanding the existing Hong Kong Wetland Park at Tin Shui Wai by 224 hectares to create “wetlands for learning.” However, about 36% of the extra area may be excluded for potential public-private partnership projects.
The fate of these areas will depend on project progress, detailed studies, and discussions with stakeholders. Additionally, the report proposes a 277-hectare wetland park at Hoo Hok Wai, including four hectares at Sandy Ridge.
Overall, the recommendations aim to balance conservation efforts with potential development opportunities in the Northern Metropolis area, creating sustainable and educational wetland parks for both locals and tourists.
