European Parliament Awards Sakharov Prize to Venezuelan Democracy Advocates

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola named Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the recipients of this year’s prestigious Sakharov Prize. The parliament honored them for their relentless efforts in fighting for freedom and democracy in Venezuela, standing up for all Venezuelans both at home and abroad.

Stand for Democracy

Machado, initially a candidate for the 2024 presidential elections, was disqualified by the Venezuelan government. Gonzalez, who replaced her, was declared the winner in a disputed election against authoritarian incumbent Nicolas Maduro. Fearing for their safety, Machado went into hiding while Gonzalez sought asylum in Spain.

Metsola applauded the duo for defending democratic values and advocating for a peaceful transition of power. The European Parliament expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people, believing in a bright democratic future for the nation.

Machado and Gonzalez were shortlisted alongside other human rights advocates for the award, which celebrates individuals’ exceptional contributions to defending human rights and freedom of expression. Previous winners include notable figures like Nelson Mandela and Alexei Navalny.
