EU Sakharov Prize Winners Uphold Values of Democracy and Freedom in Venezuela
European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced Maria Corina Machado and Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia as the recipients of the prestigious Sakharov Prize for their unwavering commitment to restoring freedom and democracy in Venezuela. The parliament recognized them as symbols of hope for all Venezuelans, both inside and outside the country, who are fighting against the oppressive regime of Nicolas Maduro.
Machado, initially running as the opposition candidate in Venezuela’s presidential election, was disqualified by the government, leading Gonzalez to take her place and subsequently win by a significant margin. Despite facing threats to their lives and legal persecution, both recipients have remained steadfast in their pursuit of a free and fair transition of power within Venezuela.
The Sakharov Prize, known for honoring individuals who champion human rights and freedom of thought, reinforces the commitment of the European Parliament to stand in solidarity with the people of Venezuela. Through this award, the parliament expresses its confidence in the ultimate triumph of democracy in Venezuela and salutes the courage of Machado and Gonzalez in their ongoing struggle.
