Uzbekistan declines to join Eurasian Economic Union, including Russia

Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, has decided not to join the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), a group that includes Russia and other countries, as reported by the Moscow Times. This decision follows a trend of allies distancing themselves from Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine to avoid potential economic sanctions.

Despite Russian promises of business benefits and new markets, Uzbekistan sees no clear advantages in joining the EAEU, with a parliamentary commission finding no benefits for the country. Kazakhstan, another member of the EAEU, has also not seen significant benefits from its participation.

Uzbekistan has declared its support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and does not recognize the proxy authorities in certain Ukrainian regions. Despite this, Tashkent maintains trade relations with Moscow and close ties with the Russian leadership.

In a recent visit, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin discussed potential EAEU membership with Uzbek officials, highlighting the benefits of joining. However, Uzbekistan remains cautious, opting to stay as an observer to protect its independence and sovereignty.
