US sanctions Sudan’s Armed Forces weapons buyer

The US Treasury has imposed sanctions on Mirghani Idris Suleiman for his role in supplying weapons to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in their conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Idris, as Director General of Defense Industries System (DIS), has facilitated weapons deals that have escalated the brutality of the war.

The press release, dated October 24, 2024, highlights Idris’ involvement in acquiring Iranian drones and engaging in a port-for-weapons agreement with Russia to fuel the conflict. The sanctions, issued under Executive Order 14098, aim to disrupt the procurement of weapons and external financing that perpetuate the violence in Sudan.

Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury Bradley T. Smith emphasized the importance of targeting individuals like Idris to prevent further escalation of the conflict. The sanctions block any property or interests owned by Idris in the US and prohibit transactions with designated persons to promote a peaceful resolution.

Financial institutions and individuals engaging with sanctioned entities may face consequences. The US remains committed to restricting the flow of weapons and funding to both sides of the conflict to promote peace in Sudan.
