US envoy and USAID chief meet with 32 partners in talks

US Ambassador and USAID Director Grateful to Partners in South Sudan

US Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. Adler and USAID Mission Director David Thompson expressed their gratitude to the 32 partners who help implement the aid agency’s humanitarian and development assistance in the African state. They discussed coordination of assistance in South Sudan’s challenging humanitarian, security, and economic context during a meeting in Juba on October 17.

The US government is the largest provider of assistance to South Sudan, contributing over $700 million in humanitarian aid during the past year. USAID has also provided $55 million in development assistance for democracy and governance, education, economic growth, and health.

Adler highlighted the transitional government’s failure to create conditions for investment in development programs in South Sudan and called upon the government to account for public revenue and invest in development. Thompson, who just began his tenure in South Sudan, expressed support for the South Sudanese people’s aspirations for peace, freedom, and development.

Overall, the US and USAID are committed to helping the South Sudanese people achieve their potential as a nation, despite the challenges they have faced since independence.
