UNICEF calls for action as Nigeria reports 83 polio cases

With 83 cases of Circulating Variant Poliovirus Type 2 (cVPVD2) reported in Nigeria this year, UNICEF is urging the government to boost immunization coverage, especially in Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi states. UNICEF Chief of Health, Dr. Eduardo Celades, highlighted the importance of stopping cVPVD2 transmission to prevent polio outbreaks in 20 countries.

Nigeria faces challenges with low routine immunization rates, vaccine hesitancy, and a significant number of zero-dose children who are vulnerable to outbreaks. Professor Oyewole Tomori emphasized the need for comprehensive immunization strategies with at least 80-90% coverage and addressing the impact of insecurity on vaccination efforts.

While Nigeria was declared polio-free in 2020, the resurgence of variant poliovirus poses a threat. Efforts to reach zero-dose children, combat vaccine-derived poliovirus, and counter anti-vaccination campaigns are crucial. The government must mobilize resources to bridge funding gaps and ensure sustained immunization efforts for a polio-free future.
