Uganda-Juba power line delayed by 4 years due to funding issues.

The 400kV transmission line project from Olwiyo in Uganda to Juba, South Sudan, is facing funding challenges and delay, pushing its completion to 2028. South Sudan relies on costly heavy oil for power, leading to issues with reliability and high tariffs. Uganda has excess power but lacks transmission lines after investing in hydropower dams. The project, which may import power from Ethiopia, aims to ease power shortages in both countries. The financing is being finalized, with the African Development Bank and EU supporting the project. Sinohydro Corporation Ltd also expressed interest in investing. Once approved, construction is expected to start in late 2022, with completion in 2028. The project aims to reduce power tariffs and strengthen the energy infrastructure between Uganda and South Sudan. With promises of financial support and commitment from stakeholders, the project is set to improve the power situation in the region in the coming years.
