Turks were shocked by the revelation of a newborn baby trafficking ring involving around 40 caregivers in public and private hospitals in Istanbul and Tekirdağ. This network aimed to exploit the Turkish social security system and families by trafficking infants, resulting in at least 10 deaths. Reports suggest that the gang profited from keeping infants in intensive care in private hospitals, earning around 8,000 Turkish lira per day. The authorities have apprehended 22 suspects so far, including doctors charged with various crimes related to the case.
The scandal, which surfaced in mid-October, has stirred political reactions criticizing the lack of oversight and delays in responding to initial complaints. The main opposition party leader called for the nationalization of implicated hospitals. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with the accused facing potentially lengthy prison sentences for their involvement in the criminal organization.
