Canada to Reduce Immigration Levels
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a significant change in Canada’s immigration policy, reducing the annual figure of permanent residents by 21%. The new targets are 395,000 for next year, 380,000 in 2026, and 365,000 in 2027, down from the previous goal of 500,000 for 2025 and 2026. Additionally, the number of international students, foreign workers, and refugees will also be decreased over the next three years.
These cuts come in response to a poll showing that 58% of Canadians believe there is too much immigration. Trudeau acknowledged that the government had been too ambitious in its goals and is now focused on finding a better balance. Immigration Minister Marc Miller emphasized that the government is listening to the concerns of Canadians.
Canada’s population has recently risen to 41 million, leading to a housing shortage. The new immigration policy aims to address these challenges effectively. Subscribe to the Anadolu Agency for more detailed news stories.
