Average Speed Cameras Rollout in Cavan and Mayo

Starting tomorrow, average speed cameras will be enforcing speed limits in two new locations in counties Cavan and Mayo. This is part of a larger plan to introduce more speed cameras across Ireland in an effort to reduce road accidents and fatalities.

The cameras will be operational on the N3 in Co Cavan and the N5 in Co Mayo, monitoring speed in both directions between specified points. If a vehicle is found to be exceeding the 100km/h limit, the driver will receive a Fixed Charge Notice with a €160 fine and three penalty points.

The Minister for Justice highlighted the importance of these cameras in changing drivers’ behaviors on the road. She mentioned a decrease in road deaths over the summer months due to increased enforcement and mentioned plans to further expand the traffic units with more Garda personnel.

This initiative follows the successful implementation of average speed cameras on the country’s motorway network in Co Tipperary in 2022.
