Seoul Mayor Calls for South Korea to Develop Nuclear Deterrent Amid North Korean Threats

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon has expressed the need for South Korea to possess a nuclear deterrent to counter the threats posed by North Korea. Oh denounced the “unbearable threats” coming from Pyongyang, following recent comments by Kim Jong-un declaring South Korea a hostile nation.

Oh highlighted the provocations by North Korea near the border, including sending trash-laden balloons and bombarding areas close to the demilitarized zone. He emphasized the urgency for South Korea to enhance its defense capabilities, emphasizing the importance of nuclear deterrence in ensuring peace.

While President Yoon Suk Yeol has reiterated South Korea’s commitment to not developing nuclear weapons, Oh has been vocal about the necessity of acquiring a nuclear arsenal. Tensions between the two Koreas have escalated in recent weeks, with North Korea threatening retaliation over a crashed drone and conducting actions to separate from the South.

As North Korea continues to denounce joint military exercises between South Korea and the US, the call for South Korea to bolster its defenses remains a pressing issue in the region.
