Empowering Developing Nations at the UN: Putin Calls for Reform

Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the need for greater representation of developing nations at the United Nations, including on the Security Council. Speaking at the BRICS Outreach initiative in Kazan, Putin highlighted the importance of adapting the UN to the changing global landscape.

Putin stressed the significance of the UN Charter in shaping international relations over the past eight decades. However, he emphasized the need for the organization to evolve and better reflect the realities of the 21st century. This includes ensuring that Asian, African, and Latin American nations have a stronger voice in key UN agencies.

Putin also called for reforms in global financial structures, pointing to the changing economic landscape of developing nations. The BRICS summit in Kazan, which aims to engage non-member states in the organization’s agenda, focuses on creating alternative mechanisms for international commerce and investments. The summit attracted participants from 36 nations, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in attendance.

This call for reform at the UN underscores the growing influence of emerging economies in shaping the future of international relations.
