Public backs reforms: Judicial committee finds widespread support

Transforming the Judiciary in South Sudan: Highlights from the Judicial Reform Committee Report

The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs in South Sudan recently marked a significant milestone with the launch of the validation of the Judicial Reform Committee (JRC) report and recommendations in Juba. Formed two years ago, the JRC has been diligently reviewing the state of the judiciary and engaging with citizens to identify key areas for reform.

Chaired by Justice James Ogola, the committee uncovered strong public support for judiciary reform, highlighting issues such as executive interference, inadequate representation, and funding shortages. Recommendations included the need for extensive judge training, empowering the police and prison services in judiciary matters, and improving welfare and working conditions.

Justice Ogola emphasized the necessity of restoring public confidence in the judiciary, advocating for independent courts and gender diversity among judges. The report exposed various challenges, from case backlogs to lack of basic infrastructure and facilities.

As South Sudan embarks on this journey towards a more efficient and transparent judicial system, the findings of the JRC report provide a roadmap for meaningful change and progress in the delivery of justice across the country.
