LA AG to reveal verdict in long-standing murder case

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón is set to announce his decision on whether to recommend resentencing for Erik and Lyle Menendez, convicted of their parents’ murder over 30 years ago. Gascón, reviewing the case, will make the announcement at a press conference in Los Angeles.

A judge will ultimately decide the brothers’ fate, with a hearing scheduled for November 26. The defense petition cites new evidence and a California law allowing resentencing based on comparable cases.

After a mistrial and guilty verdict in 1996, new evidence including alleged sexual assault and abuse emerged. The defense seeks to vacate the conviction or request a hearing for proof.

Interest in the Menendez brothers’ story has surged with the release of Netflix documentaries. Gascón, pushing for sentencing reform, believes a modern jury would view the case differently.

Relatives have advocated for the brothers’ release, emphasizing their harrowing childhood ordeals. The ongoing case reflects evolving attitudes towards victims of abuse.
