King Charles III Participates in Traditional Kava Ceremony in Samoa

King Charles III of Britain took part in a traditional kava-drinking ceremony in Samoa, where he is set to be made a “high chief” of the Pacific island. Kava, a peppery root drink with mild psychoactive properties, holds significant cultural importance in the Pacific.

Attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) with leaders from 56 countries, Charles paused his cancer treatment for an 11-day tour of Australia and Samoa. Dressed in a safari-style suit, the 75-year-old enjoyed the intoxicating brew in a ceremonial setting.

Later, he is scheduled to visit Moata’a Village to be named “Tui Taumeasina” or high chief. Despite discussions on issues like climate change and historical slavery taking place at the summit, the UK has stated that reparations for transatlantic slavery will not be on the agenda.

As leaders gather from around the world, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are absent from the CHOGM. The event aims to address critical global topics and strengthen international ties.
