Israel’s Efforts to Dismantle Hezbollah Finance – DW

Israel’s recent military campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon has shifted focus to targeting its financial infrastructure. With airstrikes on Beirut and other areas, Israel aimed at disrupting the operations of Al-Qard Al-Hassan Association (AQAH), a financial institution connected to Hezbollah. Israeli Defense Forces claimed Hezbollah took advantage of Lebanon’s financial crisis for its gain, relying on funds from Iran and the Lebanese people.

Experts revealed Al-Qard Al-Hassan provides critical financial services to Hezbollah, serving as a crucial component of its operations. Not regulated by Lebanon’s central bank, the association faces US sanctions since 2007. Meanwhile, Hezbollah’s significant revenue sources include support from Iran, services through Al-Qard Al-Hassan, and proceeds from illegal activities globally.

The bombings exacerbated Lebanon’s already dire economic situation, with mass displacement and economic collapse since 2019. Israel’s strategy of targeting Hezbollah’s finances aims to weaken the group but poses risks of prolonged conflict. While the recent strikes may have impacted Hezbollah’s cash reserves, its broader financial network remains intact, signaling potential challenges for Israel’s strategy moving forward.
