India’s EV Charging Network Expands: 6,000+ Stations Added in 6 Months

India’s EV market is on the rise, with over 9,27,097 electric vehicles sold in the first half of 2024, marking a 20.73% increase from the previous year. The key driving force behind this growth is the rapid expansion of the country’s charging infrastructure, which has seen public charging stations surge from 1,800 in February 2022 to 16,347 by March 2024.

This growth can be attributed to collaborations between various stakeholders, including government entities, private organizations, and oil marketing companies, to establish a robust EV charging network. Initiatives such as fast chargers and battery swapping stations are also being explored to cater to diverse EV owner needs.

The Ministry of Power has introduced guidelines to enhance the accessibility of EV charging stations, aiming to strategically install stations in urban areas and along major highways by 2030. This concerted effort to address range anxiety is expected to boost EV adoption rates, with a projected 50 million EVs on Indian roads by 2030.

Despite ongoing challenges such as the lack of fast chargers and high costs, continued government support and collaborative efforts are set to propel the growth of EV charging stations in India, ushering in a green revolution for the country.
