Florida takes legal action against DOJ for halting Trump assassination probe

Florida is taking legal action against the Justice Department in order to continue its investigation into the second attempted assassination of former US president Donald Trump. The state’s Attorney General, Ashley Moody, filed a complaint against Attorney General Merrick Garland after being instructed to pause the investigation until the federal inquiry is complete. Governor Ron DeSantis had previously stated that Florida would pursue state charges against the suspect, Ryan Routh, who is already facing federal charges.

Florida officials were instructed not to interview witnesses and could only cooperate with the federal investigation, citing federal law that gives the FBI jurisdiction over attempted assassinations of political candidates. Florida argues that delaying their investigation could impact the outcome of any potential prosecutions and is suing to protect its ability to investigate state violations.

The Justice Department has not commented on the lawsuit. DeSantis initiated the investigation after an incident at Trump’s golf club in West Palm Beach, where an assassination attempt was foiled by a member of the Secret Service.
