Child protection expert describes Kyran case as ‘horrifying’

The Special Rapporteur on Child Protection, Caoilfhionn Gallagher, has described the case of missing schoolboy Kyran Durnin as “horrifying” and “deeply concerning”. She highlighted the need for independent reviews to address systemic concerns in child protection in Ireland and ensure accountability for Kyran’s case. The Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris, also expressed shock at the circumstances surrounding Kyran’s disappearance, emphasizing the unique challenges of the case.

The ongoing search operation at the former Durnin family home in Dundalk has intensified, with a focus on a small area of wasteland. The Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee, urged anyone with information to come forward and emphasized the importance of understanding any failures in the system that led to Kyran’s disappearance. Tánaiste Micheál Martin also stressed the need for a comprehensive review to prevent similar incidents in the future.

As the investigation into Kyran’s case continues, authorities are working diligently to uncover the truth and hold those responsible for any failures accountable.
