Canada to Reduce Immigration Numbers Amid Pressure on Trudeau Government

Canada is making a significant policy shift by drastically reducing the number of immigrants allowed into the country in an effort to stay in power. The annual permanent-resident target is expected to drop to 395,000 for next year, a 21% decrease from the previous goal of half a million. Subsequent targets for 2026 and 2027 will be even lower at around 380,000 and 365,000, respectively.

These new targets, reported by The National Post, come at a time when Canada has traditionally prided itself on welcoming newcomers. However, recent debates around immigrants have shifted, influenced in part by soaring housing prices across the country.
