Austin expresses worry over Israeli attacks on Lebanese army

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed concern over Israeli strikes on the Lebanese army following the deaths of three soldiers. In a call with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Austin emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of Lebanese Armed Forces and UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon. This comes after recent attacks that resulted in the deaths of eight Lebanese troops and accusations of multiple attacks on UNIFIL members by Israel.

During the call, Austin also offered condolences for an Israeli brigade commander killed in northern Gaza amid Israeli operations targeting Hamas. He did not comment on the civilian casualties caused by Israel or the enforced starvation in certain areas of Gaza.

The situation highlights the complexity and volatility of the region, as different actors navigate their own interests and security concerns. Austin’s focus on ensuring the safety of both Lebanese and UN forces demonstrates a commitment to upholding peace and stability in the region.
